Keeping your pets cool and happy this summer.
1. Provide plenty of fresh water.
Ensure your pets have access to clean, cool water at all times. Place multiple water bowls around your home and yard, and consider adding ice cubes on particularly hot days to keep the water refreshing.
2. Create shady spots.
If your pets spend time outdoors, make sure they have access to shaded areas where they can escape the sun. Trees, umbrellas, or a pet-friendly tent are great options to provide a cool retreat.
3. Avoid the hottest part of the day.
Plan walks and outdoor playtime during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. Hot pavement can burn your pet’s paws, so always check the ground temperature with your hand before heading out.
4. Never leave pets in cars.
Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can rise to dangerous levels in minutes. Pets should never be left in a vehicle unattended.
5. Keep them groomed.
Regular grooming helps your pets stay cool by removing excess fur and improving air circulation. However, avoid shaving their coats too short, as their fur also protects them from sunburn.
6. Watch for signs of heatstroke.
Pets can overheat quickly, especially brachycephalic breeds like pugs and bulldogs. Symptoms of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool place, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.
7. Provide cooling options.
- Cooling mats or vests are excellent tools to help regulate your pet's body temperature.
- Frozen treats like ice cubes with a bit of peanut butter or broth can be a fun way to cool them down.
8. Protect against parasites.
Summer is peak season for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Regularly check your pet for signs of pests, and ensure they are up to date on flea and tick prevention treatments.
9. Pool safety.
If your pet loves to swim, always supervise them around pools or natural bodies of water. Provide easy exit points and rinse them off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt.
10. Keep indoor spaces cool.
Ensure your home stays pet-friendly by using fans or air conditioning. Create a cool spot for your pet with a damp towel or a chilled mat where they can relax.
